Effectively remove makeup from blemish-prone skin, ready for a good night’s sleep.
Taking off your makeup every night is important for all skin types, and for blemish-prone skin it’s especially beneficial. Keeping pores clear of oil, dirt or anything that could create a blockage means there’s less chance of blemishes forming. Makeup sitting on the skin overnight can clog the pores and may lead to breakouts.
Night is also when your skin rests, renews and recharges, healing and refreshing itself ready for the next day. A good night-time routine can help give your blemish-prone skin the best chance to beat breakouts, and by sticking to the same routine every day, you can maintain the right conditions for keeping your skin clear, fresh and healthy-looking over time.
Step 1 - Makeup Remover
Start your routine by taking off your eye and lip makeup with a specially formulated makeup remover. Using a dedicated product, rather than a general cleanser, means you’re more likely to remove makeup easily and without pulling or dragging at delicate skin. It’s especially important to do this if you use waterproof cosmetics or wear heavy makeup. Use a cotton pad to sweep the remover over your closed eyelids and lips.
Ste 2 - Cleansing
Now that you’ve removed any mascara, eyeliner, brow colour, lipstick and eyeshadow, you can cleanse the rest of your face. If your skin is blemish-prone, it’s also likely to be oily, so choose a cleanser formulated for oily skin. A good cleanser will effectively remove dirt, makeup and oil without stripping the skin’s surface or leaving it dry and tight.
If you wear foundation, primer, powder and cheek colour, make sure you cleanse thoroughly. If you’re using a cream cleanser, follow up with a toner to make sure every last trace is removed from your skin. If you’re using a cleansing wash, you could even repeat the cleansing step a second time.
Some cleansers contain exfoliating particles – if you’re using one of these, make sure you don’t use it to remove makeup in the eye area.
Step 3 - Moisturise
If you’re currently experiencing a breakout, apply a topical treatment onto freshly cleansed skin. Many on-the-spot treatments are well-suited to overnight use, as they can get to work while you sleep and won’t interfere with your makeup.
It’s really important to moisturise, even if your skin tends to be oily. Use a lightweight moisturiser or serum designed for oily skin.
