The harsher winter months can be tough on our complexions. Plummeting temperatures and biting winds can dry out your skin, increasing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

But there’s no need to hibernate indoors as soon as the mercury drops. With a few simple tips, you can keep your skin looking and feeling fresh and smooth whatever the weather.

Stay hydrated

When the weather’s cold outside you’re more likely to want a warm hot chocolate than a refreshing glass of water, but it’s important that you keep well hydrated, otherwise your skin will start to show signs of drying out and become more susceptible to fine lines. Keep a bottle of water with you throughout the day to prompt you to drink, or why not try heating it up and adding a squeeze of lemon or lime?

Increase your moisturising

Dry skin is one of the unfortunate side effects of winter weather so you’ll want to boost your moisturising regime. If you’ve been using a lighter, oil-free product during the summer, it may be worth swapping it for a heavier product which will draw additional moisture to your skin.


When it comes to applying your moisturiser, really massage it into the skin. Not only will this warm your skin, it’ll make sure the lotion is sinking right in.

Some areas, like under your eyes, around your nose and around your lips, tend to be drier and more susceptible to the first signs of ageing, so make sure you pay them special attention during the colder months, massaging extra cream in as needed. Keep up sun protection

It may seem strange to put on sun protection in the depths of winter, but SPF 15 or higher should be part of your daily skincare regime, whatever the weather. Just because you can’t feel the sun, doesn’t mean it isn’t there, so you still need protection against harmful UV rays which can age your skin. In fact, if there’s snow on the ground sun protection becomes even more important as it reflects the sun’s rays.

Exfoliate lightly

Exfoliating allows your moisturiser to work harder, as it’s not having to battle through layers of dead skin, making it an essential part of your skincare routine in the winter months.

However, be careful not to over-do it. Over-exfoliating can leave your skin feeling dry and even damage your lipid barrier so your skin struggles to hold moisture on its own. To exfoliate gently, try a chemical exfoliator which contains ingredients which smooth your skin, without you having to physically scrub. Simply use your fingers to gently massage the cream in.
Remember, exfoliation works best when it’s done regularly, so make sure you make it a regular part of your routine – once or twice a week should be enough.

Protect your lips

Your lips can certainly suffer during the winter months, if you don’t look after them. They have very few oil glands to keep them moisturised on their own, so can become really dry during colder weather. Carry a moisturiser or lip balm with you to apply throughout the day, to form a protective barrier and keep your lips plump and hydrated. You can also exfoliate your lips gently to remove any flaky, dry skin.

Keep baths and showers warm, not hot

A hot bath or shower is tempting after a day out and about in the cold, but if the water is intensely hot it can actually reduce your skin’s natural oil levels and dry it out. Try keeping the water warm or lukewarm, but if you can’t resist a scalding bath, limit your time under the water and make sure you moisturise as soon as you get out.

Invest in a humidifier

It’s not just when you’re outdoors battling the elements that your skin is at risk of drying out, heated indoor air can also suck the moisture out of your skin. A humidifier can help increase the water content in the air, helping to keep your skin nicely hydrated.
