Everyone is raving about Goji berries, tiny little red berries full of antioxidants. We talk to Dr. Michelle Braude, founder of The Food Effect about how they can help get rid of acne.
What is a Goji berry?
A goji berry or wolfberry is a fruit that belongs to the same family as potatoes, tomatoes, aubergines, and red chilies. Native to Asia, these berries have recently emerged as stars thanks to their amazing antioxidant powers.
How can Goji berries help with acne?
Goji berries are packed with antioxidants that can help acne prone skin that eliminate harmful ‘free radicals’.
Dr Michelle confirms “free-radicals travel through the body “stealing” electrons from healthy cells, such as the skin, causing damage, including acne. Antioxidants help in preventing and treating acne by circumventing this free radical damage that harms the skin and the immune system, thereby warding off inflammation and breakouts.” She adds “regularly supplementing your diet with foods rich in antioxidants, such as Goji berries, can help prevent breakouts giving you healthy, acne-free skin.”
Which antioxidants do Goji berries supply?
Dr Braude says “goji berries are loaded with beta-carotene, (a form of Vitamin A) which helps promote healthy skin. This strong antioxidant promotes healthy smooth skin and boosts the immune system, necessary for preventing breakouts and inflammation associated with acne.”
What else hides in the Goji berry?
“Goji berries are also an excellent source of Vitamin C, another key nutrient for healthy glowing skin. Vitamin C is an essential antioxidant that promotes healing, growth and tissue repair. It is essential in the production of collagen, a protein that creates new skin and maintains its structure. Vitamin C is especially beneficial to acne-prone skin, as it prevents flare-ups due to external impurities.”
So, there you have it, Gojis are little berries packed with goodies. Include them into your healthy balanced diet and watch the antioxidants at work!
