Applying toothpaste on spots to dry them out might seem like a good idea, but acne expert Dr Tabi Leslie and blogger Viviannadoesmakeup discuss why it can do more harm than good.

Viviannadoesmakeup: So I will admit that when I was younger whenever a spot came up I would put a little bit of toothpaste on it and go to sleep, and I feel like I’m not the only one - it’s a huge myth out there that everyone has probably tried at some point… What are your thoughts on the matter it?

Dr. Tabi Leslie: Well did you find it helpful?

No, I felt like it just dried, the toothpaste just dried on my skin, I’m not sure it really worked!

Correct. So there must be some basis to this theory, an old wives’ tale; people tell their friends just put a bit of toothpaste on it. And it probably does act as a drying agent, it may well act as an antiseptic but at the end of the day it could irritate the skin which is already irritated, especially in people with sensitive skin. So it’s probably better to use skincare product that’s actually formulated for your skin and avoid using toothpaste or products that are made for somewhere else.

There are plenty of other things out there so save the toothpaste for your teeth!
