What does hypoallergenic mean?
Generally, cosmetics that are labelled hypoallergenic have been formulated with sensitivity in mind, often that will mean that a special effort has been made to carefully select the ingredients and tested to ensure the level of reaction may be reduced. This is often done by choosing ingredients that have a good level of tolerance or removing fragrance allergens or even reducing the number of ingredients. However, containing less or more natural ingredients doesn’t automatically mean a product won’t give you a reaction.
Can I have an allergic reaction if I only use hypoallergenic cosmetics?
The problem is there aren’t any strict regulations about the use of the term hypoallergenic on cosmetics and everyone’s skin is unique. Ingredients used in cosmetics are carefully regulated and must be safe for them to be used in your products. So even products with the label can’t guarantee you won’t have a reaction. However, all labels do list all the ingredients used in each product. So if you know what you’re allergic to make sure you check the label to stay on the safe side.
Should I choose hypoallergenic products or not?
If you have sensitive skin, and you don’t know what triggers your reaction, hypoallergenic products can be a great starting point, as they usually contain fewer ingredients and fragrances. Choosing a hypoallergenic product won’t mean you won’t have a reaction – as everyone’s skin is unique, but the likelihood is lower!
