How to treat a dry, itchy or oily scalp

Socially embarrassing and physically uncomfortable, scalp skin problems such as itching, dryness or oil (even sometimes all three) can be very stressful for the sufferer. Let's have a look at what can cause the skin on your scalp to act up, and how you can treat it.

Dry skin on the scalp

Globally known as dandruff, dry flakes of skin on the scalp can also be the signs of a skin condition, so it's recommended to visit a dermatologist if you experience repeated recurrences. If you have a simple case of dry skin, however, you can help treat the problem by using hair care specifically formulated for your dry skin. Just like your face, if you're not using the right products, you won't see any results.

Itchy, uncomfortable scalp

Itching and discomfort are usual signs of a sensitive scalp. The condition is not uncommon: think of all the pollution, weather changes and chemicals that our scalp has to endure. To balance and soothe the skin, it is recommended to opt for a gentle hair cleansing product specifically designed for sensitive skin in order to restore the physiological balance of the skin on your scalp.

Oily scalp

A naturally oily scalp can be hard to manage. The oil produced on the skin can quickly transfer to your hair, which then looks greasy and unwashed. The trick to finding a solution is to work out why your skin is over-producing oils. Do you over-wash or use harsh cleansing products on your hair to remove the oil? This might have an inverse reaction: your skin responds by producing more oil to replace the oil you washed away. By washing your hair a maximum of every two days, and using a shampoo such as those from the La Roche-Posay Kerium range, you'll help keep your hair fresh and clean without overdrying the scalp.
