Moisturiser for the face and body: what is the difference?

Moisturiser for face and body: what is the difference?

When you’re shopping for a moisturiser, have you ever wondered why you need a different formula for the face and body? Or considered if you could just use one main multi-tasker to answer your every need? The short answer is not if you want to get the best results.

But why is this and how do body and facial moisturisers differ? The needs of the skin on our faces tend to be more complex than that on our body. This is due to a few factors such as that the face produces higher levels of sebum which can cause further concerns such as congestion and oiliness. The skin on our face is also more at risk of UV-induced skin ageing, dehydration lines and dullness.

More delicate areas such as that around the eyes or lips also require an even lighter, dedicated moisturiser formulated with concern-specific ingredients.

Our concerns for the skin on our bodies, however, generally tends to centre around dehydration and dryness which can be more easily solved with a thicker emollient-based moisturiser. If you were to apply these types of moisturisers to your face, you would probably find them too greasy and heavy. Over time, this could create excess sebum and create further issues such as blackheads and congestion.

So to help you find the moisturiser for you, we’ve created a top list of our most popular La Roche-Posay moisturisers for the face and body.

For the face

Toleriane Ultra Cream

If your main concerns for the skin on your face are dryness, tightness, redness, itchiness, then you’ll need a very gentle moisturiser such as Toleriane Ultra Cream. Specifically formulated for sensitive skin, it has a minimalist, hypoallergenic formula that’s approved by Allergy UK.

Effaclar Duo (+)

Effaclar Duo (+) is a targeted anti-blemish moisturiser for the face that corrects and hydrates oily skin. Its effective formula is enriched with Niacinamide, Lipo Hydroxy Acid, Salicylic Acid, Zinc PCA and Glycerin. It helps reduce the appearance of marks and blemishes, unclog pores, control shine and excess sebum, whilst keeping the skin hydrated throughout the day.

For the body

The skin on the body can become dry and uncomfortable if it’s not sufficiently hydrated, particularly if your skin is more on the sensitive side. Lipikar Lait Body Milk has a lipid-replenishing formula that’s suitable for the whole family and can be used everywhere from the body, to the feet, and the hands. Its formula contains a nourishing combination of 20% Shea butter and canola oil (rich in Omega 3 and 6), glycerine and niacinamide and helps to replenish lost lipids and reinforce the skin’s natural barrier.

Cicaplast Hands

Our hands are one area of our bodies that can become drier than most, largely due to the number of times we wash them throughout the day and the fragility of the skin in this area. As such, they need lots of nourishment and a dedicated cream that’s intensely hydrating. Cicaplast Baume is a barrier hand cream that contains a high concentration of minimal ingredients including La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water. It creates an invisible glove-like effect on the skin, providing immediate comfort and hydration.
